{"id":1258,"date":"2011-06-15T13:59:20","date_gmt":"2011-06-15T21:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/private-person.com\/blog\/?p=1258"},"modified":"2011-06-15T14:27:00","modified_gmt":"2011-06-15T22:27:00","slug":"privacy-laws-back-door","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/private-person.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/privacy-laws-back-door\/","title":{"rendered":"Privacy Laws Back Door?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/private-person.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/secret-deal.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1259 lazyload\" title=\"secret-deal\" data-src=\"https:\/\/private-person.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/secret-deal.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"93\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/93;\" \/><\/a>A recent revelation (but should not be a big surprise) that the\u00a0Foreign Affairs and Department of Justice bureaucrats advised U.S. officials on how to skirt privacy laws.<\/p>\n<p>Sure WE can&#8217;t give it too you but if you go HERE and CLAIM this, then they can give it too you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Where is that kind of help when citizens need it to figure out how to protect ourselves from government?<\/p>\n<p>Well, I guess it&#8217;s a case of &#8220;governments sticking together&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>University of Ottawa law professor Amir Attaran said department officials were essentially giving advice on how to break Canadian law and those involved should be reprimanded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever gave this advice was certainly conspiring to defeat the privacy law and that person should be severely reprimanded and probably fired,\u201d said Attaran. \u201cYou are conspiring with a foreign government to violate Canada\u2019s laws as a Canadian public servant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Canadian law enforcement agencies, like the RCMP or the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, provided the information to the U.S., they would have broken the law, said Attaran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the police disclosed it would have been illegal,\u201d said Attaran. \u201cI think the Privacy Commissioner should be looking at this.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For the full story go here:<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/aptn.ca\/pages\/news\/2011\/06\/01\/canadian-officials-advised-u-s-on-how-to-skirt-privacy-laws-state-department-cable\/<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>NDP MP Charlie Angus, the party\u2019s critic on ethics and privacy issues, said he found the cable\u2019s revelation \u201cdisturbing\u201d and would bring up the issue during an upcoming planned meeting with Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart.<\/p>\n<p>Angus said the mutual assistance treaty wouldn\u2019t allow for a circumvention of privacy laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we need to know what is going on in terms of how this government is handling Canadians\u2019 private information,\u201d said Angus. \u201cWe need to be wondering if this was a one-off, or if this is a pattern. We are going to ask a few questions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let me see, more than one individual planning with another to do something illegal&#8230;hmmm doesn&#8217;t that qualify as a conspiracy?<\/p>\n<p>No, never happen. Conspiracies only ever occur <strong>outside<\/strong> government&#8230;right?
